“Is AI going to replace marketers like me?”

As a marketing recruiter, I’m being asked this more than ever: “Is AI going to replace Marketers like me?”

It’s a question on a lot of minds, and the answer isn’t as simple as you might think.

In the UK, marketing job volumes are down by around 7.5% over the past 12 months, with the biggest impact felt at entry level.

That isn’t solely because of AI.

Wider pressures, from economic uncertainty and cautious hiring to legislation such as the Employee Rights Bill, are also influencing decisions.

But AI is having a clear impact, and it’s affecting the whole marketing spectrum.

How teams are changing

Across levels, businesses are rethinking roles and expectations:

  • Entry-level: Fewer junior hires, paused grad programmes, and roles focused mainly on execution are being scrutinised. AI now handles many of the “doing” tasks that once formed the learning ground for early-career marketers.
  • Mid-level: Specialists are expected to move beyond execution. They now need to combine strategy, analytics, and creativity, and know how to leverage AI effectively.
  • Senior-level: Leaders are increasingly tasked with guiding AI integration, making judgement calls, and linking marketing to wider business outcomes. Influence, commercial insight, and decision-making have never mattered more.

In short, execution is being automated, while strategic thinking and judgement are becoming the differentiators at every level.

Smaller teams, higher expectations

Across organisations, marketing teams are generally becoming leaner, but with broader expectations per role. Companies are looking for marketers who can:

  • Think strategically, not just execute
  • Use AI tools to augment output
  • Analyse insights and make decisions
  • Influence stakeholders and drive results
  • Own outcomes rather than just tasks

The bar is rising, and the skills in demand span junior to senior, albeit in different ways.

So… is AI taking over marketing?

From where I sit?

No. But alongside economic and legislative pressures, AI is reshaping how marketing teams are built, what roles are created, and what skills are expected.

Human judgement, creativity, and strategic thinking are becoming the real differentiators, at every stage of a marketing career.

That said, marketers aren’t powerless.

There are things you can do to strengthen your position, sharpen your CV, and approach your job search differently in this evolving market.

That’s a whole other conversation.

We’re collating our thoughts, data and real-world observations, and we’ll be sharing a follow-up post later this week focused on what marketers can do practically right now.Stay tuned. 👀
