🎯 “If You Don’t Apply in 2 Days, Don’t Bother”? Let’s Talk About That…
You’ve probably seen the posts on LinkedIn:
“If a job’s been open for more than 2-4 days, don’t waste your time, your CV won’t even be seen.”
It’s a bold claim, and one that’s gained traction with jobseekers frustrated by the black hole of online applications. But is it true?
As recruiters who work with both agencies and in-house hiring teams every day, here’s our take: it’s not that simple.
⏱️ Yes, early applications can have an advantage
There is truth in the idea that applying early puts you in a stronger position. Why?
- Hiring managers and recruiters often review applications as they come in (especially for high-priority or hard-to-fill roles).
- If someone brilliant applies early, they may be fast-tracked and even offered the role before it officially “closes.”
- Algorithms on job boards and ATS platforms may prioritise fresh applications at the top of the list.
So yes, if you see a job that feels right, don’t sit on it for days or weeks. Apply when it’s live and relevant.
❌ But to say your CV “won’t be seen” after 2-4 days? That’s false.
Here’s why that advice is misleading:
- Not all roles are filled immediately. Some roles are live for 2-3 weeks (or longer) because the hiring manager wants to see a range of candidates.
- Recruiters revisit CVs throughout the process. Especially if early applicants aren’t quite right, new ones are reviewed daily.
- Some businesses have internal processes or multi-stage sign-off systems that mean they aren’t rushing to hire in 48 hours.
- Strong CVs still stand out, regardless of timing. If you’re a close match to the brief, a good recruiter will want to speak to you, whether you applied on day 1 or day 10.
🙅♀️ The 2-4 Day Rule = Unhelpful Gatekeeping
Telling jobseekers not to apply after a few days is disheartening, especially for those balancing job hunting with work, parenting, or other life commitments. It also assumes every company is moving at lightning speed, and they’re not.
💡 Our advice?
- Act fast when you can, especially for roles that are in-demand or time-sensitive.
- But don’t rule yourself out just because it’s been a week. If you’re a strong match, apply.
- Tailor your CV to the role, keep it clear and relevant, and if possible, follow up with the recruiter or hiring manager to express interest.
So in our experience, fast applications can help, but great candidates still get noticed beyond the mythical 2–4 day window. Don’t let a social media “hack” talk you out of a role that could be the right fit.
