Does Size Matter?

When it comes to choosing a workplace, the size of the company is often a decisive factor for many job seekers. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard statements like, “I don’t want to work for a small company,” or “I don’t want to work for a large company.” It’s an understandable sentiment, but does size matter, or is it really about something else entirely? The key to making the right decision is understanding how to choose the right company to work for based on what truly matters to you

The Myth of Size

From our experience, and from the thousands of conversations we’ve had with professionals over the years, the actual size of a company often has surprisingly little impact on day-to-day work. Think about it: your immediate reality is shaped by your team, your manager, your role, and the company culture, not necessarily the headcount. Yet, a bad experience at a large company can lead people to generalise and say, “Large companies aren’t for me.” Similarly, a tough stint at a small company might make someone think, “I’ll never work for a small business again.”

But are these assumptions fair?

What Really Matters?

As a job seeker, you should be clear on what’s important to you. Is it opportunities for hands-on experience? Exposure to leadership? Structured career progression? Instead of making assumptions about company size, consider what you actually need to thrive. Here are some factors that often hold more weight:

  • Leadership and Management: The quality of your manager and the leadership team can make or break your experience, regardless of company size.
  • Team Dynamics: Who you work with day-to-day has a significant impact on your job satisfaction. A toxic or supportive team will outweigh any organisational size considerations.
  • Company Culture: Whether a company values its employees, promotes flexibility, and invests in well-being is far more important than the number of people on payroll.
  • Opportunities for Growth: Career progression, development opportunities, and the chance to take on meaningful work are critical factors that transcend size.

When Size Does Matter

There are cases where company size plays a role in the type of experience you’ll have. For example:

  • In a very small business, you might get exposure to multiple areas of the business, be involved in strategic decisions early, and gain experience you wouldn’t typically get in a larger organisation. However, resources may be limited, and career progression might depend on the company’s growth.
  • In a very large company, you might benefit from formal training programmes, a clear career ladder, and well-established processes. However, decision-making can be slower, and your role may be more specialised.

If having a direct impact and wearing many hats is a priority for you, a smaller business might be a great fit. If you prefer structured learning and defined career paths, a larger organisation might suit you better. The key is identifying what matters to you and researching accordingly.

Rethinking the Narrative

The truth is, company size is often just a convenient scapegoat for a bad experience. A poorly managed team or a lack of growth opportunities can happen in a company of any size. Instead of focusing on size, use your research and interviews to understand:

  • The leadership style and team dynamics.
  • The company’s track record in employee well-being and growth.
  • Whether the organisation’s values align with your own.
  • Be clear on your own goals, aspirations, and what you’re looking for in your next role.

So, does size matter? Only if it directly impacts the things that are truly important to you. Make sure you’re asking the right questions before making assumptions.
