Interview Tip: How to Answer “Why Are You Leaving Your Current Role?” – When the Real Answer Is… Your Boss Was a Nightmare
Let’s be honest: not every job ends with a glowing send-off and heartfelt goodbye.
Sometimes, the reason you’re looking for something new is simple: your manager made your working life really difficult.
But in an interview? That’s not something you can say quite so bluntly.
So how do you answer the classic “What’s your reason for leaving?” when the truth is awkward, or even painful?
Here’s our Interview Tip on how to keep it professional without hiding your truth.
🎯 1. Focus on the pull, not the push
Even if your manager was the key reason you’re leaving, lead with what’s attracting you to your next role.
✅ Good answer:
“I’m ready for a role where I can have more autonomy and contribute strategically to bigger-picture campaigns.”
🚫 Not-so-good answer:
“My current manager is too controlling and micromanages everything I do.”
You’re still making your point, but in a constructive way that shows you’ve thought about what you want next.
✨ 2. Reframe the experience as a learning moment
Bad management teaches us what not to do. It can also clarify what kind of environment you do thrive in.
✅ Try saying:
“I’ve realised how important a collaborative, trust-based environment is for me. I’m looking for a culture where teams are empowered and ideas can be explored.”
It keeps the focus on your growth and your values without throwing anyone under the bus.
🤝 3. Keep it classy – especially if probed
If the interviewer does dig deeper, stay calm and factual.
Avoid venting or getting emotional, even if you’re still frustrated.
✅ For example:
“There were some leadership challenges that made it difficult to do my best work. I tried to make it work, but in the end, I knew I needed a fresh start.”
It’s honest, without going too far into the weeds.
🧭 4. Prepare your answer ahead of time
If your previous role was stressful or ended on a low, it’s easy for that emotion to bubble up in the moment. Practising your answer helps you deliver it smoothly and stay grounded.
Ask yourself:
- What did I learn from the experience?
- What am I looking for in my next team/manager?
- How can I answer this question in a way that reflects my professionalism?
So, How do you answer “Why Are You Leaving Your Current Role?”- When the Real Answer Is… Your Boss Was a Nightmare:
You don’t have to pretend your previous role was perfect, but you do need to show that you’re thoughtful, self-aware, and moving forward with purpose.
Leaving because of a bad boss doesn’t make you a bad candidate. It makes you someone who knows what they want, and who’s ready for a better fit.
And that? Is exactly what good employers want to see.
