Have You Heard About the ‘September Surge’ and Are You Ready?

September to November has always been particularly busy in the world of recruitment. Companies look for new talent and people search for new jobs before the end of the year so, there’s lots of LinkedIn profiles and CVs being updated. Whilst the UK is not one for putting a moniker to this period, a new trend on TikTok that originates from the USA does and it’s known as the ‘September Surge’.

What is the September Surge?

The September Surge is a US term for the period between Labour Day and Halloween when there is a significant increase in job hunting and job vacancies posted. This year, the trending term has been picked up by the UK job market and it’s easy to see why. Recent data released by Gumtree shows that July and August are much slower in the recruitment industry, predominantly due to summer holidays, but when we reach September it’s like a new term has started. Job posts come out of the woodwork and people get serious about finding a new job before Christmas.

This time of the year is often associated with companies wanting to refresh their talent pool and fill the gaps in their teams. It is also a time when companies look to expand to maximise market and industry opportunities; particularly certain roles, like marketing and communications.

What does this mean for job hunters?

For job hunters, this time of year could be one of the best times to find your next job. But you still need to approach the task of finding a new role with the best preparation. Here are some tips to help you.

·   Undertake a job audit. Before applying for a new vacancy, do a quick job audit (and be honest with yourself). What we mean by this is take some time to reflect on your professional and personal situation now. This might include your financial status, your family set-up (kids off to university or parents moving in), what your current job is offering you and where you want to be in the future. Consider whether you are genuinely happy and enjoy your job because if you’re dreading going to work, it will not only impact you but also those around you.

·   Update your profile. Update and refresh your CV and LinkedIn profile, if you have one. Add your latest work experience, skills and any new qualifications. Highlight any courses you’ve attended, certificates you’ve attained and any key experiences. Get some more top tips on creating a CV that stands out in our blog on CV’s.

·   Refresh your interview skills. Make sure you blow away any cobwebs in respect of your interview skills and make sure you know how to sell yourself. A good way to do this is get a friend or partner to do some practice interviewing with you. Think about common interview questions you are likely to be asked and prepare your answers in advance. When you get an interview, don’t forget to research the company and the role you’re going for to show your interviewer that you are the only person for this position.
